I recently reinstalled Elden Ring through Steam after not playing it for a while. Since then, the game runs for a few minutes, briefly shows a black screen, and then closes to the desktop without overheating. Reinstalling the game didn't help. My system has a GeForce GTX 1070, a Ryzen 5 5600X, and a 750W power supply. What else should I try?

Try deleting Elden Ring’s shader cache so the game can rebuild it. You can also use DDU in Safe Mode to completely remove your graphics driver, then install the latest driver fresh instead of installing it over the existing one. As a workaround, add -dx11 to the game’s Steam launch options. If that prevents the crashes, the DirectX 12 path may be the problem. It’s also worth disabling the Steam overlay and any MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner overlays. Finally, monitor temperatures and hardware readings with HWiNFO while playing.
The exact crash behavior and system specs are important here. Since this is a black screen followed by a desktop crash rather than a reboot or blue screen, start with the graphics-related fixes: clear the game’s shader data, perform a clean GPU driver installation, and test with DirectX 11. Also make sure no monitoring or overlay software is hooking into the game.

It doesn’t overheat—the game briefly goes to a black screen and then closes to the desktop. My GPU is a GTX 1070, my CPU is a Ryzen 5 5600X, and I’m using a 750W power supply. I’ll try the shader cache, driver reinstall, and overlay settings.
