I'm building an AM5 gaming system for competitive CS2 at 1080p with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. My budget covers either the Gigabyte B850 AORUS Elite WiFi7 or the Gigabyte X870 Gaming X WiFi7. My main concerns are VRM cooling under PBO and Curve Optimizer, BIOS stability with 6000MHz CL30 EXPO memory, and long-term reliability. Which board would you recommend for the best overall cooling and stability?

The B850 AORUS Elite is a solid board and should have no trouble sustaining boost clocks with PBO and Curve Optimizer. One advantage is that all three M.2 slots retain full x4 connectivity without lane sharing. The main drawback is physical layout: the top PCIe x16 slot sits fairly close to the CPU socket, which can make large air coolers and tall memory modules feel cramped. The X870 has a similar layout, though, so it isn’t really a reason to choose one over the other.
Both boards are more than capable of handling the 9800X3D, so VRM temperatures and stability should be excellent on either one. The X870 has a slightly stronger 16+2+2 power design compared with the B850’s 14+2+2, but that difference is effectively irrelevant for an eight-core CPU drawing under 150W. EXPO compatibility, BIOS behavior, and reliability should be very similar. The biggest practical difference is connectivity: the X870 includes USB4, while the B850 provides full x4 connectivity for all three M.2 slots and has more USB-A ports. The B850 also appears to have the newer audio implementation.
