How can a frontend engineer transition into design engineering?

I've been hearing more about the role of a design engineer, although I'm less interested in the title itself and more interested in the underlying skills. As a frontend developer, I want to get better at understanding interfaces, questioning established patterns, and creating new interaction conventions when they make sense. What should I study or practice first to move in that direction?

Think of it as frontend engineering with a strong focus on interface planning and user experience. Study layout, information hierarchy, interaction design, accessibility, ergonomics, and how much information should be presented at each point. Focus on the reasoning behind the interface and how it behaves, not just the framework or visual demo.

Start by building and shipping design-heavy frontend work. Create custom interactions from scratch, pay attention to how people use them, and iterate based on what you observe. The role can be vague, so practical projects are usually more useful than trying to define the title first.

A good starting point is to deepen your experience in your current role while deliberately taking on interface problems. Recreate well-designed products, experiment with alternative interaction patterns, and learn to explain why a particular design works. Over time, combine that design thinking with your existing ability to implement and refine the result.
