I work regularly with React and JavaScript on the frontend and want to move toward a full-stack role. My longer-term goal is to build my own applications, but I'm not sure what to learn first on the backend. I started in game development, completed a frontend boot camp, and now want to broaden my skills. Since I recently had a child, I need a self-directed path that fits around limited time and budget rather than returning to school full-time. What concepts, technologies, and projects would make a good starting point?

Use AI tools as a learning assistant, not as a replacement for understanding the fundamentals. Ask them to explain concepts, suggest a manageable study plan, review your code, and help you debug—but make sure you can explain the generated code and spot mistakes yourself. With limited time, a small project built consistently is more useful than trying to finish a huge course or read every advanced software design book first.
Start with the fundamentals of web architecture before jumping into a framework. Make sure you understand why an application needs a backend, what a database does, and how a request travels from the browser to the server and back. Once that data flow makes sense, Node.js is a natural next step because you already know JavaScript. Build a small Express server locally, connect it to a simple React app, and keep the frontend and backend in separate repositories so the boundaries stay clear.
A straightforward stack would be React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. Build something small with user input and stored data rather than trying to learn everything at once. A basic CRUD app—such as a task tracker or personal library—will teach you routing, validation, database queries, and connecting an API to the frontend.
Java with Spring Boot is another strong route, especially if the companies near you use it. Start with a few simple CRUD endpoints and a local database such as MariaDB, then gradually add authentication, validation, and error handling. It has a steeper setup than a minimal Node project, but Java and Spring remain widely used and marketable. Free video courses and documentation can be enough if paid subscriptions aren’t practical.
