How can I build a simple text-based website with tables and links?

I have no coding experience and want to make a very simple website that mainly presents text, tables, and hyperlinks, without elaborate styling—something like a minimalist HTML page. I came across MDN while looking into web technologies, but I'm not sure whether learning HTTP is what I need or where to begin. What should I learn first?

You’re probably thinking of HTML rather than HTTP. HTML is the markup used to create headings, paragraphs, links, and tables. HTTP is the communication protocol browsers and web servers use to transfer those files. A basic HTML tutorial is the right place to start, and you can skip CSS at first if you want a plain appearance.

MDN is a useful reference, though it can feel dense for a complete beginner. Look for an introductory HTML tutorial first, then use MDN when you need details about a particular element such as for links or

for tabular data. Visual editors can also help you experiment, but learning the underlying HTML will give you more control.

Start by creating a file named something like index.html on your computer and open it in a web browser. You can edit the HTML in any basic text editor, save it, then refresh the browser to see your changes. You don’t need a server just to practice locally.
