How can I install a hard drive in a case without a drive bay?

I'm preparing to edit videos and images and found a hard disk drive that fits my budget. The problem is that my older computer case doesn't have a dedicated mounting location for a 3.5-inch HDD. An SSD would be too expensive, and I already have an NVMe drive installed that still contains files I can't remove. What's the safest way to install or use the HDD in this case?

You could attach a drive cage or mounting plate to the inside wall of the case with heavy-duty double-sided tape. Taping the cage instead of the drive keeps adhesive residue off the HDD and gives it better protection. Leave enough room around it for cooling and make sure the cables aren’t bent or strained.

Mounting the cage rather than sticking tape directly to the drive also seems safer for the power connector and makes the setup easier to change later.

If you can’t fit an internal bracket, an external enclosure is another option. USB can work fine for storing and moving media, but I’d avoid relying on it as the only location for active editing if the connection might be unplugged or disconnect unexpectedly.

That’s my concern too. A disconnect during a large project could interrupt the transfer or cause problems, so I’d prefer a securely mounted internal solution if possible.

A simple temporary solution is placing the HDD flat on the bottom of the case, but it should still be prevented from sliding around and touching anything that could cause a short. Remove it before transporting the computer so it can’t bang into the other components.

The cleanest option is to mount the drive in a universal HDD cage or bracket, then secure the bracket somewhere inside the case with screws, strong double-sided tape, or another proper mounting method. Avoid letting the drive sit loose, and make sure it doesn’t block airflow or press against the power cables.
