I want to install Kubuntu on my laptop, but I don't have a USB flash drive or a CD/DVD available. What alternative installation methods could work, and what hardware or existing operating system would I need?

If Linux is already installed and the machine uses GRUB, you may be able to place the Kubuntu ISO on an existing partition and boot it directly with a custom GRUB entry. Ubuntu-based images can often be started using the ISO loopback feature with the kernel and initrd from the image. This requires editing GRUB correctly and preparing the partitions carefully so you do not overwrite your current installation.

Network booting through PXE is another possibility, but it normally requires a second computer or server on the same network to provide the installer. It may also be difficult or unsupported over Wi-Fi, so it is usually more complicated than using removable media.

PXE can work as an alternative if you already have another machine available to act as the boot server, but it is not usually the easiest option for a first-time installation.

Depending on your hardware, an SD card or microSD card with a built-in reader might work similarly to a USB drive. Some Android phones can also present an ISO as bootable storage, though compatibility varies. Installing directly from a hard-drive partition or using tools that modify Windows boot files is possible in some cases, but it is risky and should only be attempted after making full backups and creating proper recovery media.

The safest and simplest option is still to get an inexpensive USB drive of around 8 GB or more. A no-USB installation can leave you without a recovery method if something goes wrong, especially during a dual-boot setup. Make sure you have backups and a way to reinstall or repair the current system before trying anything unusual.
