I'm trying to install Steam on my Acer Chromebook, so I assumed I needed to replace ChromeOS with Linux. The Chromebook has an x86_64 processor, and the Linux development environment appears to be available in ChromeOS. However, I'm confused because some Debian files seem to be unsupported. Should I enable the built-in Linux environment, or do I need to replace ChromeOS entirely?

If Steam is your main goal, don’t replace ChromeOS right away. Open Settings, go to Advanced, then Developers, and choose Linux development environment. Follow the setup prompts; this creates a Debian-based container inside ChromeOS. After it finishes, you can install supported Linux applications from the Terminal. Also check whether your Chromebook supports Steam and whether it has enough storage and memory—x86_64 alone doesn’t guarantee good performance.
There are two separate approaches here: the built-in Linux development environment, which runs alongside ChromeOS, and installing Linux as a replacement or dual boot. The first option is much safer and is probably all you need to try Steam. Replacing ChromeOS requires checking the exact Acer model, firmware support, storage, and hardware compatibility first, so don’t start that process until you know the model number.
Confirm the exact Chromebook model before attempting a full Linux installation. Support varies widely between Acer models, even when both use x86_64 processors. If the built-in Linux environment is enabled but Steam won’t install, the issue may be the Chromebook’s Linux container support or hardware performance rather than the Debian files themselves.
The option is available, but I’m not sure whether it’s already enabled. I’ll check the Developers settings and complete the setup there first.
