How can I make my Wi-Fi adapter use the 2.4 GHz band?

I recently moved into an apartment where my PC cannot be placed near the Wi-Fi router, and running Ethernet is not practical. The connection is sometimes slow and unstable, possibly because the signal has to pass through several walls. I changed my wireless adapter's preferred band to 2.4 GHz in Device Manager, but Windows still reports that the current network band is 5 GHz. Does "preferred band" actually force the adapter to use 2.4 GHz, or is there another setting I need to change? Would separating the router's 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks help? If the connection remains unreliable, would a Wi-Fi repeater or powerline adapter be a good solution?

If possible, a real wired connection is the most reliable option. Ethernet is best, and MoCA can work well if the apartment has usable coaxial cable outlets. Powerline adapters can also help, but their performance depends heavily on the building’s electrical wiring and which outlets are on the same circuit, so results vary a lot.

Keep in mind that 2.4 GHz is usually better at passing through walls, but it is not automatically faster. Apartment buildings often have many nearby 2.4 GHz networks, so that band can suffer from congestion and interference. In some locations, 5 GHz may still perform better even through a wall, so it is worth testing both rather than assuming one will win.

A basic Wi-Fi repeater may improve coverage, but it can reduce speed and add latency because it has to receive and retransmit the wireless signal. If you use one, place it somewhere between the router and PC where it still gets a strong signal—not right next to the PC in a weak-signal area. A wired access point or mesh system with a wired backhaul is generally better when available.

“Preferred band” is only a preference, not a strict instruction. If both bands use the same network name, the adapter can still connect to whichever one it thinks is best. To force 2.4 GHz, give the router’s two bands different network names, then connect the PC specifically to the 2.4 GHz network. You can also check the adapter’s connection properties afterward to confirm the active band.
