I'm considering buying a used RTX 3070 and want it to remain reliable for at least three more years. What should I check before buying, and what maintenance or settings would help extend its lifespan?

Keep the card clean, make sure the fans are working properly, and monitor temperatures occasionally. If temperatures start rising, replacing the thermal paste—and possibly the thermal pads—can help. Avoid unnecessary overclocking or increasing the power limit. An undervolt can be useful because it may reduce power consumption and heat while maintaining similar performance, as long as it’s tested for stability.
Used GPUs aren’t automatically near the end of their lives. Many cards continue working for a decade or longer; failures are often caused by heat, worn-out fans, electrical problems, or plain bad luck. Focus on inspection and temperatures rather than assuming the card will fail soon.
Regular dusting and good airflow are usually more important than aggressive maintenance. Keep the card at reasonable temperatures, don’t block its fans, and replace a fan if it starts making noise or stops spinning. Running games at 1080p can reduce load in some situations, but resolution alone doesn’t determine whether the card will survive.
There’s no way to guarantee a specific lifespan, but GPUs often last many years. Before buying, look up the exact model for known cooling or manufacturing issues, check its condition, and make sure the fans, display outputs, and temperatures are normal. A card that was kept cool and clean has a better chance of lasting three years or more.
