How Can I Protect My PC From Coastal Humidity and Salt Air?

I live very close to the Pacific Ocean, almost within throwing distance of the high-tide line. The cool, salty air has damaged several of my PCs over the years, and my GPU is the latest casualty. Temperatures here usually stay between 40°F and 65°F, so this is not the hot, tropical kind of humidity people associate with coastal Florida. A normal room dehumidifier seems impractical because I would be trying to dry an entire room constantly. I have considered putting silica gel, baking soda, or another desiccant inside the PC, or building an enclosure around it and managing the air inside, but I worry about restricting airflow. Are there practical ways to reduce the damage from coastal moisture and salt, or is conditioning the whole room really the only effective solution?

Start by measuring instead of guessing. A cheap humidity meter placed near the computer can show whether the issue is high indoor humidity, salt carried in through an open window, condensation, or some combination. Also avoid letting the PC sit directly on a cold floor or near exterior openings, since temperature changes can encourage condensation. Desiccant packs are useful for sealed storage when the computer is turned off, but they are not a practical substitute for controlling the room while the PC is operating.

The salt may be at least as serious as the moisture. Sea spray and airborne salt can settle on contacts and circuit boards, then cause corrosion even when the relative humidity does not seem extreme. Keep the PC indoors and away from open windows, clean dust filters regularly, and inspect the system for residue. A sealed box is usually a bad tradeoff because it restricts cooling and will not solve the problem once humid air gets inside. A clean, conditioned room is the long-term fix; hardware marketed for harsher environments can help, but it will not eliminate corrosion in salty air.

An air conditioner can help even if you do not need much cooling. Many room and portable units have a dehumidify-only mode, and they remove moisture as part of the cooling process. The unit needs to be sized for the space and the local conditions; an undersized appliance may run constantly without bringing humidity down enough. Getting the room near a stable 40–50% relative humidity is more useful than trying to dry the inside of the computer itself.

A properly sized dehumidifier is still the most effective solution. Silica gel and baking soda can only absorb a tiny amount of moisture, and they would need constant replacement or recharging. If the room is cool, look at a desiccant-style dehumidifier rather than assuming every compressor unit will perform well. Keep the windows closed when possible and measure the room with a temperature and humidity sensor so you know whether the humidity is actually improving.
