How can I remove a locked Apple ID before selling my iPhone?

A few months ago, I forgot my Apple ID password and entered it incorrectly several times while trying to install an app. Apple then locked the account, and support later told me that the Apple ID no longer existed. The iPhone is still signed in to that account, so I can't erase it normally because it asks for the Apple ID password. Windows also doesn't detect the phone when I connect it through Apple's device software. I'm hoping to clear the phone and remove the account before selling it to a friend. What legitimate options do I have?

The account may have been deleted, renamed, or disabled, but the important issue is whether Find My iPhone and Activation Lock are still enabled. You can put the phone into recovery or DFU mode and restore it, but that only erases the device—it will still require the original Apple ID during setup if Activation Lock is active.

Submit an Activation Lock removal request through Apple’s official support process. You’ll usually need a valid proof of purchase or invoice showing that you own the phone. Explain that the Apple ID is no longer accessible and include the device details they request. If Apple approves the request, they can remove the lock from their side.

I may have tried that before and sent Apple a copy of my invoice, but I’ll submit the request again and make sure all the purchase details are included. Thanks.

The computer connection problem and the locked account are separate issues. For the connection, try a different certified cable and USB port, update the Apple device software and drivers, and place the phone in recovery mode before connecting it. Even if the computer recognizes it and you restore it successfully, you’ll still need Apple to resolve Activation Lock unless you can sign in with the original account.
