An FPS counter has appeared in the corner of my screen and is blocking part of the display. I have a Lenovo Legion 5i, or a similar Lenovo gaming laptop, and the usual keyboard shortcuts I found online have not turned it off. What is the best way to identify and disable this overlay?

It sounds like an overlay rather than something built into the game. If it is from Xbox Game Bar, press Windows + G and disable the performance widget or turn off Game Bar under Windows Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar. If you have NVIDIA software installed, try Alt + Z, open the overlay settings, and turn off the performance display.
Check whether the counter is coming from MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner Statistics Server. Those programs can show a small FPS counter over every game. Open their settings and disable the on-screen display, or close the program temporarily to see whether the counter disappears.
