My Windows installation seems seriously damaged. The antivirus is using a large amount of RAM, repeatedly detecting and removing files that appear to belong to my games, and sometimes the games close unexpectedly. I have to disable real-time protection to use them reliably. Windows updates and attempts to download or install Windows fail with errors, and System File Checker reports corrupted files but cannot repair them. I'm also having trouble creating Windows installation media and receiving an error code. What is the safest way to recover the system?

The exact error messages matter here. A code such as “0x8…” isn’t enough to identify the cause, so write down the complete code and the step where it appears. If SFC found corrupted files it couldn’t repair, you could try DISM from an administrator Command Prompt, but if Windows Update, installation media creation, and repair tools are all failing, a clean reinstall is usually faster and more dependable than continuing to patch the damaged installation.
The most reliable fix may be a clean Windows reinstall. Use another, known-good computer to create a bootable Windows USB, start the affected computer from that USB, back up anything important first if possible, then delete or format the existing Windows partitions and reinstall. Since malware or severe system corruption is possible, avoid trusting the current installation to repair itself. Also make sure you download the installer from Microsoft’s official site and use a blank USB with enough capacity.
