How can I restore thousands of photos removed from my phone by Google Photos?

“Free up space” normally removes only the copies stored on your phone; it does not delete the backed-up versions from Google Photos. You can still open a photo in Google Photos and use Share to send it directly to Instagram or another app without downloading it first. Also check the app’s trash just in case, but the photos should mainly be in your cloud library.

If the concern is avoiding cloud storage costs, first make sure you have enough space on the phone or an external drive. It’s also worth keeping a separate backup rather than relying on one cloud account. Disabling automatic backup or changing the Google Photos backup settings can help prevent the phone from being cleared again, but be careful not to delete the cloud originals.

There usually isn’t a one-tap “undo” for Free up space because the feature is designed to remove local copies after confirming the photos are backed up. The important distinction is that the photos should still be available online in Google Photos, even though they no longer show in the regular device gallery.

For a large library, use Google Takeout from a computer and export your Google Photos data. Download the archive, extract the files, and copy the photos back to your phone in batches. That’s much more practical than tapping Download on 10,000 individual images. Downloading them creates local phone copies; it won’t create extra copies in Google Photos unless you upload those files again.
