How can I safely free up disk space without CCleaner?

I've used CCleaner for about eight years, mostly the free version and only occasionally to clear cookies or recover a little disk space on an older Windows laptop. I'm tired of the pop-ups and would like to uninstall it, but I'm not sure which alternatives are trustworthy or whether I can do the same cleanup manually.

What are the safest built-in Windows tools or free programs for finding large files, removing temporary data, and clearing browser clutter? I'm not especially tech-savvy, so practical steps and warnings about anything I should avoid deleting would be appreciated.

For figuring out what is actually using the space, WizTree is useful because it shows your drive visually and makes large folders easy to spot. WinDirStat is another free option if you prefer a less intimidating layout. Don’t delete random files from Windows or program folders just because they look large; use the tool to identify personal files, old installers, videos, and backups instead.

You can also check Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Windows may identify temporary files, unused apps, and large or rarely used files there. For extra space, look at old Windows installation files only if you’re sure you won’t need to roll back an update, since removing them can eliminate that recovery option.

Start with Windows’ built-in cleanup tools. Open Settings > System > Storage and review Temporary files, then use Storage Sense to remove temporary data automatically. You can also press Win+R, type cleanmgr, and run Disk Cleanup. Be careful with Downloads and Recycle Bin because those may contain files you still need.

BleachBit is a free alternative for clearing temporary files and browser data without the advertising that pushed you away from CCleaner. Still, you don’t need to clean constantly—Windows and browsers handle most routine maintenance. Uninstall unused programs from Settings > Apps, and clear browser cookies from the browser’s own privacy settings if that’s all you need.
