How can I safely straighten bent CPU pins?

I bent several pins while installing a new fan and made things worse when I tried using a small flathead screwdriver. I can't afford to replace the motherboard or processor, and a credit card seems too thick to fit between the pins. What is the safest way to straighten them without damaging more?

A fine sewing needle or safety pin may be easier to control than a screwdriver. Work under bright light and use magnification if possible. Move one pin at a time until it matches the alignment of the surrounding rows, and avoid touching the pins more than necessary.

Would I use the point of the safety pin to push the pins into position, or try to slide it between the rows?

The important thing is to restore the original alignment rather than simply making every pin point in exactly the same direction. Compare the bent area with an undamaged section, make very small corrections, and stop if a pin looks like it may break. Don’t power on the system until the processor or socket is seated normally without force.

A razor blade can work for gently nudging individual pins back into line, but use extreme care and make tiny adjustments. A mechanical pencil with the lead removed can also slide over a pin and help guide it straight. Don’t force anything or keep bending a pin back and forth, since the metal can snap.

I don’t have a mechanical pencil, but I may try the razor blade very carefully. The small screwdriver only bent the neighboring pins.
