I travel frequently for work and am considering building a compact console-style gaming PC in a mini-ITX case. I would keep it with me as carry-on luggage rather than checking it, but I'm unsure how well the components would handle being moved around, carried in a backpack, and exposed to the vibration and bumps of air travel. What case and packing precautions would help prevent damage, especially around the graphics card and CPU cooler?

If you really want a desktop, consider a layout where the graphics card connects through a PCIe riser rather than hanging directly from the motherboard. Some mini-ITX cases are designed this way, which reduces strain on the motherboard slot. I’d also avoid a very heavy GPU and make sure the CPU cooler is firmly mounted. Carry it in a padded case and never check it as luggage.
The main concern isn’t just the case being sturdy—it’s the weight of the components inside. A large graphics card can put stress on the PCIe slot and motherboard when the system is shaken or tilted. If you build one for travel, use a compact case with a solid panel, secure the GPU with a support bracket, and avoid unnecessarily large or heavy cards. Pack the computer so it cannot slide around inside your luggage.
For occasional trips, a compact build with carefully secured components should be reasonable. Remove or separately pack anything that could work loose, use internal padding that won’t shed fibers or create static, and inspect the GPU and cooler after traveling. If the trip involves frequent flights or constant movement, though, a laptop or handheld is likely the more practical solution.
A small-form-factor PC can survive being carried around, but it’s still less convenient and more fragile than a laptop or handheld. You also have to bring a keyboard, mouse, display, power cables, and possibly adapters. For moving between cities regularly, a gaming laptop or handheld PC will usually be cheaper, easier to protect, and much less of a hassle.

A handheld is especially convenient if your games run well on one, since it eliminates the need to bring a separate monitor and full-size peripherals.
