I run a business with two residential units above it. I want to share internet with an elderly resident I trust, but another family previously received the Wi‑Fi password and may still have access. I'm considering changing the password to disconnect everyone, but I'm worried that the elderly resident could accidentally reveal it from one of her Android phones. If a phone connects through an NFC tag or QR code, can the saved Wi‑Fi password still be viewed in the phone's settings? What would be the safest way to give her access while keeping the business devices and cameras protected? My router has a guest network, device scheduling, and some blocking options, but it has limited controls.

If you need bandwidth limits, schedules, stronger isolation, or more precise access rules, the inexpensive router may simply not support them. A better router or access-point system can provide separate networks, guest bandwidth limits, device blocking, and clearer management. For a business, keeping every device off the modem’s direct Wi‑Fi and connecting everything through the managed router is also worth checking.
Log in to the router and review its connected-device list. Rename or label the devices you recognize, then block anything unfamiliar. Many routers also keep a history of devices that have joined, not just the ones currently online. A whitelist can provide tighter control, but it may become inconvenient whenever a legitimate person gets a new phone or another device.
Once a device has connected to a Wi‑Fi network, the credentials are usually stored on it. Depending on the phone, the password can often be revealed or shared later through settings, a QR code, or another sharing feature. NFC and QR codes only make connecting easier; they don’t make the password impossible to retrieve. There isn’t a reliable way to let someone use a normal shared Wi‑Fi network while guaranteeing they can never discover or share its credentials.
That was my concern. I had hoped an NFC setup might connect the phone without making the password visible, but it sounds like the phone still has to store it.
The practical solution is to use separate networks. Keep the business computers, cameras, and other trusted equipment on the main network, then create a separate guest network for the upstairs resident and anyone else who needs internet access. Give the guest network a unique password, enable client isolation if the router offers it, and change that password whenever you need to remove access. This prevents guest devices from reaching the business network even if the password is shared.
The router does have a guest network, although it’s fairly basic. I may need to use that rather than trying to make the main network work for everyone.
