I'm currently stuck in a job I've hated for the past three and a half years, while teaching myself programming on the side. I started with Python during the rise of AI and have recently been exploring blockchain as well. I keep wondering whether all this effort is worth it, where I'm actually headed, and how AI might affect future programming careers. I want to pursue my own goals instead of simply following the expected path, but I'm worried about how long I can keep balancing this job, studying, and my mental health. I'm looking for practical advice or encouragement on how to keep moving forward.

You’re already doing something difficult by learning consistently while working a job you dislike. The AI uncertainty is understandable, but learning to build, solve problems, and turn ideas into working projects is more valuable than simply memorizing syntax. Try choosing one project you genuinely care about and focus on finishing it. A completed project can create more momentum and confidence than endlessly starting new tutorials.
If you’re learning because you enjoy it and your curiosity is keeping you engaged, that’s a strong reason to continue. If your main goal is changing careers, though, try to be realistic about what that requires. Look at the skills employers are actually seeking, build a small portfolio, get feedback from experienced developers, and set practical milestones instead of relying only on motivation. Enjoyment can get you started, but a clear plan will help you make steady progress.
