How Can I Switch Between Two PCs With a KVM Shortcut or Button?

I recently started using a two-PC setup and discovered software KVM tools that let one keyboard and mouse control both computers. I'd like to switch between the PCs using a physical button, keyboard shortcut, or possibly a Stream Deck action. What software or hardware options work well for this? I'm working with very limited desk space, so a compact solution would be ideal.

A compact USB sharing switch can be a good alternative to software KVM tools. It connects the keyboard and mouse to two computers and switches between them with a physical button. The main advantages are that the peripherals stay directly connected, there’s no network-related input delay, and neither computer has to act as the always-on primary system. The downside is that the device and shipping costs can add up, and it still takes up some desk space.

That sounds useful, but cost and desk space are both major concerns for me. My setup is in a very small room, so I’m trying to avoid adding another bulky device.

Many hardware KVM switches support a keyboard shortcut for changing computers. Common options include pressing a specific key twice quickly or using a configurable key combination. Check the manual for each model, since the shortcut varies between devices.
