My workplace uses Retevis RB48 handheld radios, but they're unusually large and heavy for the way our staff have to carry them. I'd like to buy smaller replacements, but two different models advertised as license-free FRS radios failed to communicate with the existing units, even after matching the channel and privacy code. With one model, the original radio indicated that it was receiving something, but no voice came through in either direction. What specifications or settings should I check to confirm that another radio will work with the RB48s? Is communication limited to the same brand, or should compatible FRS radios work across brands?

There may also be a workplace licensing issue. If these radios are being used for business communication, confirm that the frequencies and radio service are authorized for that use in your country. A proper business VHF/UHF system may have been programmed for the site and may not be replaceable with consumer FRS units, even if the radios look similar. The safest route is to get the exact frequencies, tone settings, bandwidth, and operating mode from whoever manages the workplace radios, then program or purchase replacements based on those details.
The RB48 specification and the replacement radio’s actual frequency table are what matter, not just the words “license-free FRS” in the advertisement. Compare the listed transmit and receive frequencies, and make sure both devices are analog FRS radios rather than PMR, GMRS-only, digital, or proprietary models. Some inexpensive radios also use misleading channel labels or combine FRS and other services under the same menu.
The brand normally shouldn’t matter if all of the radios are truly analog FRS units using the same frequency. However, channel numbers aren’t always enough: different manufacturers can map channels differently, and the privacy-code numbers can refer to different CTCSS or DCS tones. Try turning privacy codes completely off on every radio and testing in a quiet area first. Also check that the new radios support the same analog mode, bandwidth, and channel frequencies as the RB48s; digital-only or differently programmed channels won’t work.

The receiving icon with no audio often means the radios are on the same frequency but using different squelch tones, or that one radio is transmitting a tone or mode the other doesn’t understand. Testing with all tones disabled is the simplest way to separate a compatibility problem from a settings problem.
