I recently started using Linux for gaming and to become less dependent on Microsoft. I installed CachyOS with Hyprland, and I have also encountered something called Noctalia, but I'm still unsure which part of my overall experience each component provides.
My current understanding is that Linux is a family of operating systems sharing a common foundation, CachyOS is one Linux distribution, and Hyprland provides much of the graphical look and behavior. Is that roughly correct? What exactly does Noctalia do, and how does it relate to Hyprland?
I'd also appreciate a beginner-friendly explanation of the main layers involved, including the Linux kernel, the distribution, the desktop or window manager, and the graphics system. Hyprland mentions Wayland as well—what is Wayland, and where does it fit?

Noctalia is an additional desktop shell and collection of interface components that can be used alongside Hyprland. Depending on how it is configured, it can provide things like a panel, launcher, notifications, widgets, quick settings, and other visual elements. Hyprland manages windows and their placement, while Noctalia supplies more of the surrounding desktop interface and styling.
That is why a Hyprland setup can feel like a complete desktop even though Hyprland alone is mainly responsible for window management and compositing.
Linux itself is the kernel—the core that communicates with your hardware and provides services to programs. A complete Linux-based operating system adds many other pieces around it: system tools, drivers, an audio system, networking services, applications, and so on.
A distribution, or distro, packages those pieces together into something installable and maintainable. CachyOS is a distribution based on Arch Linux, with its own packages, defaults, configuration, and optimizations. Other distributions make different choices about software versions, update schedules, and default settings.
Wayland is not a desktop environment or a window manager. It is a protocol—a set of rules for how graphical programs and the compositor communicate. The compositor is the component that coordinates drawing windows and presenting them on your display.
The older alternative is the X11 system, commonly encountered through X.Org. Wayland was designed as a newer replacement with a simpler, more modern design. Hyprland is a Wayland compositor, so it provides the part of the graphical stack that applications use to appear on screen. Some older X11 applications can still run through compatibility layers such as XWayland.
Hyprland is a Wayland compositor that also acts as a tiling window manager. It places application windows on the screen, handles resizing and switching between them, and can provide effects such as animations, shadows, and rounded corners. It is not a complete desktop environment by itself.
A desktop environment such as KDE Plasma or GNOME usually bundles a window manager or compositor together with panels, settings tools, notifications, an app launcher, and other desktop utilities. With Hyprland, you typically assemble those pieces yourself or add separate projects that provide them.
