How much do I need to learn before getting a backend development job?

I'm interested in learning backend development and eventually getting hired. I understand that backend is a broad field, so I'm not expecting to master everything. For an entry-level role, what topics should I focus on, and how long might it realistically take to become job-ready?

The timeline depends on your experience and how consistently you study. If you’re starting from scratch and can practice regularly, learning the basics for a simple API and database might take a few months. Becoming competitive for a job usually takes longer because you’ll also need projects, problem-solving practice, and an understanding of deployment and real-world code. More advanced infrastructure work is something you continue learning throughout your career.

Backend development covers a huge range, and nobody ever knows all of it. For an entry-level job, focus on one programming language, a framework, HTTP and REST APIs, databases and SQL, authentication, Git, testing, and basic deployment. Building a few complete projects is more useful than trying to learn every backend technology.

That helps— I’m mainly asking what would be enough knowledge to start applying for jobs, rather than how long it takes to master backend development.
