I'm considering wiping my main drive and moving my gaming PC from Windows to Bazzite. My system has a Ryzen 5 5600, RTX 3060 12GB, 16GB of RAM, and a 4K 60Hz monitor. I usually play at 4K or 1440p on medium-to-high settings and aim for about 60 FPS.
I've used Linux on a couple of laptops and really enjoy it, but this would be my first time using it as my main gaming operating system. Friends told me that Nvidia users can lose roughly 5–10% performance compared with Windows when gaming through Proton. Is that still a realistic expectation with current Nvidia drivers and Proton, particularly on an RTX 3060?
Bazzite has been running well so far, and I like the overall experience. I'm mainly wondering whether I'd be giving up noticeable performance by switching completely to Linux. If there is a meaningful difference, would another gaming-focused distribution such as CachyOS offer better performance? I'm less interested in Nobara because I'm concerned about the size of its contributor base.

I moved to CachyOS with a newer Nvidia card and didn’t notice a meaningful performance difference from Windows. Some games improved over time as drivers and Proton releases changed, while a few titles still had problems. That’s why I’d treat the 5–10% figure as a rough possibility rather than a rule, and choose the distribution that gives you the least troubleshooting.
