Our organization recently moved to co-management and Windows Autopatch, and we're planning how to deploy Windows 11 26H2. Our current update ring has feature-update deferrals and deadlines configured, but the guidance we found recommends setting feature-update deferral to zero and using separate feature update policies for targeting.
Those feature update policies seem to offer fewer controls than update rings. They let you choose when the update becomes available or mandatory, but they don't appear to provide a separate grace-period setting. For organizations using Autopatch, is it better to let Autopatch manage the entire pilot by changing its target groups and keeping deferrals in the update ring, or should feature-update deferrals be set to zero and deployment managed through dedicated feature update policies?

You can still configure a deadline and grace period in the update ring, but the feature update policy itself may only expose availability and mandatory-install dates. That isn't necessarily a problem—the feature update policy controls version targeting, and the ring supplies the enforcement settings. Just avoid using competing deferral values in both places.
If you're using a dedicated Feature Update policy, set the feature-update deferral in your update rings to zero. Keeping both mechanisms active can create confusing date calculations and unexpected deployment timing. Use the feature update policy to lock devices to the desired Windows version, while the update ring handles the broader update behavior.
Check which type of feature update policy you're creating. The multi-phase option provides more rollout controls than the simpler policy, so it may be a better fit for staged deployment. Autopatch can pilot the update, but if you want predictable version targeting, a dedicated feature update policy with zero deferral is generally cleaner.
