I'm upgrading from a Core i7-6850K on an X99 Asus Strix board with 32GB of DDR4-3200, and I'll be pairing the new system with an RTX 4080. I recently found a good deal on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and now need to choose an AM5 motherboard.
There are so many similar-looking boards that I'm having trouble narrowing them down. My current requirements are a dark-colored ATX or E-ATX board with four RAM slots, at least four SATA 6Gb/s ports, 2.5Gb networking or faster, and support for the 9800X3D. I've mainly been looking at B850, X870, and X870E models. I could replace some of my SATA drives with M.2 SSDs if necessary.
My budget is around $300 AUD. Some options I've found are the Gigabyte B850 Gaming X WiFi 6E at $299, Gigabyte X870 Gaming X WiFi 7 at $329, and Asus TUF Gaming B850-E WiFi at $279. I've generally preferred Gigabyte and Asus, but I'm open to other brands.
How do you compare motherboards and avoid problems with lane sharing, VRMs, storage expansion, or other limitations? Is there anything important I should add to my filters, and is B850 the better value choice over X870 for this build?

A motherboard comparison spreadsheet or visual board map can save a lot of time. The useful details to compare are the rear-panel ports, M.2 and SATA connections, PCIe slot layout, and which devices share chipset bandwidth. This is especially useful if you expect to run several SSDs and external drives simultaneously.
I’d also pay attention to rear USB count, the audio codec if onboard audio matters to you, BIOS flashback, and the physical spacing around the GPU and CPU cooler. The extra features on premium models aren’t automatically worth the cost.
AM5 generally behaves best with two matched DDR5 DIMMs rather than four sticks. Four slots are useful for future expansion, but filling all four can make high memory speeds and stability more difficult. I’d buy a 2x32GB or 2x16GB kit at a sensible DDR5-6000 speed instead of planning around four modules.
For storage, PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives are already very fast for normal use. Replacing older SATA SSDs with TLC-based NVMe drives is worth considering, but don’t choose a more expensive chipset solely because it has additional M.2 slots unless you actually need them.
From the three deals listed, I’d lean toward the Gigabyte X870 Gaming X if the extra cost is comfortable and its lane layout works for your drives. Otherwise, the Asus TUF B850-E or a similarly equipped Gigabyte or MSI B850 ATX board should be perfectly suitable for a 9800X3D and RTX 4080.
I’d rank your priorities as: required storage connections, PCIe lane layout, rear USB ports, network speed, VRM quality, BIOS features, and then appearance. Brand loyalty matters less than the specific model, because every manufacturer has strong and weak boards in the same generation.
Beyond the feature list, look at the VRM design and cooling. A board with at least around eight CPU power phases and DrMOS or SPS power stages with decent heatsinks should be more than adequate for a 9800X3D. The boards you listed appear fine in that respect, so rear USB selection, audio, networking, M.2 layout, and price can decide between them.
Also check independent motherboard reviews, since specification pages don’t always tell you how well the VRMs, BIOS, memory support, and fan controls perform in practice.
For this CPU, a good B850 board is usually all you need. X870 mainly adds USB4 and sometimes different storage or expansion options, so I’d only pay extra if you have a specific need for those features. WiFi 7 is also not a major reason to upgrade unless you already have compatible networking equipment.
Check the motherboard manual carefully for lane-sharing notes. On some X870 boards, installing multiple NVMe drives can reduce the speed of one of the M.2 slots, while other designs may affect an expansion slot. That isn’t necessarily a problem, but it’s better to know before buying.
