I'm upgrading from a Core i7-6850K on an X99 system with 32GB of DDR4 and will be pairing the new build with an RTX 4080. I recently found a good deal on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and now need an AM5 motherboard.
There are around 90 compatible options after filtering, so I'm trying to work out how to narrow them down without overlooking an important limitation. I generally prefer ASUS or Gigabyte, although I'm open to other brands.
My current requirements are an ATX or E-ATX board in a dark colour, B850/X870/X870E chipset, four RAM slots, at least four SATA 6Gb/s connections, and 2.5Gb networking or faster. I could replace two SATA drives with M.2 drives if necessary, since most boards seem to have three M.2 slots. I've also considered a back-connect design, but the available models are either too expensive, white, or lack enough SATA ports.
My budget is roughly $300 AUD. Current options I'm considering include the Gigabyte B850 Gaming X WiFi 6E at $299, Gigabyte X870 Gaming X WiFi 7 at $329, and ASUS TUF Gaming B850-E WiFi at $279.
How do you normally narrow down the choices and check that a board won't have unpleasant PCIe, storage, VRM, or compatibility limitations later? Are there any important features I should add to my filters?

Try to use two matched DDR5 sticks rather than filling all four slots. Four DIMMs can be harder on the memory controller and may force a lower speed or require more troubleshooting, especially on AM5. Buy the capacity you need in a two-stick kit.
Also, if your budget allows it, replacing older SATA SSDs with good TLC-based PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives is worth considering. PCIe 5.0 drives are compatible with PCIe 4.0 slots, but their headline speeds rarely make much difference in gaming or normal desktop work.
After checking the technical details, I’d look at detailed motherboard roundups and reviews for the final decision. They usually reveal BIOS quality, memory compatibility, boot times, VRM temperatures, fan-control behavior, and whether the advertised features work without awkward compromises.
From the three options you listed, I’d lean toward the X870 Gaming X only if you specifically want its USB4 or other connectivity. Otherwise, the cheaper B850 board should provide essentially the same gaming performance with the 9800X3D.
The extra lanes on X870 and X870E can be misleading. Much of the additional connectivity comes through the chipset, so extra M.2 slots, SATA ports, USB ports, and networking may share the chipset uplink. In ordinary use, 2.5Gb Ethernet, SATA, and USB transfers are unlikely to saturate it together, but a board can still have specific slot-sharing restrictions.
X870E is mainly worthwhile if you already know you need additional high-speed expansion, more USB4 connectivity, or several full-speed storage devices. Otherwise, B850 is probably the sensible choice.
For this CPU, a good B850 board is generally enough. X870 mainly adds USB4 and sometimes extra connectivity, but those features can affect how the motherboard’s limited PCIe lanes are allocated. Check the manual’s lane-sharing table rather than assuming every M.2 slot operates at full speed.
For example, some X870 boards reduce one or more secondary M.2 slots to x2 when multiple drives are installed. Other models may share lanes with a PCIe slot. This usually won’t matter for a normal gaming system, but it’s worth checking if you plan to run several NVMe drives or lots of high-speed USB devices at once.
I’d start by comparing the rear I/O, M.2 and SATA layout, WiFi/Ethernet, audio codec, and whether installing a drive disables another slot. A motherboard comparison chart or a visual lane-layout guide makes this much easier than relying only on the filters in a parts list.
The MSI Pro B850-S Evo WiFi is another model worth checking in your price range. It has a strong rear USB selection and may be a better fit than some of the similarly priced alternatives if connectivity matters to you.
