How to Reinstall Windows 11 on a Different Drive Without Losing Files?

I'm trying to reinstall Windows 11 on my D: drive, which is a 2TB SSD that I've already formatted. I've created a USB media for the installation and booted from it. My problem is that my C: drive also has Windows 11 installed and contains important files. I want to install Windows on D: first, boot from it, and then move any necessary files from C: to D:, after which I plan to format C: to make it empty. However, whenever I attempt the installation on D:, I get stuck in a loop. After the Windows installation starts and my PC restarts, I see a message saying, "It looks like you started an upgrade and booted from installation media. If you want to continue with the upgrade, remove the media from your PC and click Yes. If you want to perform a clean installation instead, click No." If I click 'No', it takes me back to the drive selection screen and repeats the process. What should I do?

Sounds like you've hit a snag. My suggestion is to start fresh by formatting the D: drive again during installation. Make sure to select the option for a clean install and not an upgrade. If it prompts you about using a previous version, that's important; you need to click it for the setup to go through correctly.

You might want to disconnect the C: drive before starting the installation on D:. This way, Windows will see D: as the primary drive (C:) and won't get confused. After installation, you can reconnect your old C: drive and transfer your files. It's a safer method and might help avoid that looping issue you’re experiencing.

I understand that laptops can be tricky with internal SSDs. If you can't easily remove the C: drive, try checking your BIOS settings to see if you can change the boot order or priority to focus on the USB drive first. It might help you bypass that restart loop.
