My iPad's screen suddenly turned completely black while I was scrolling through TikTok. It had been fully charged, was working normally the night before, and had only been used for about three years. I've tried force-restarting it, charging it for several hours, and repeating the reset process, but there's still no display. I also tried shining a light at the screen to check for a failed backlight, but I couldn't see an image. I'm not sure which model it is, although I later realized the model information is printed on the back. I connected it to a Mac and tried updating and restoring it through Finder. The software appeared to download and the restore may have completed, but the screen stayed black and the update or restore window occasionally crashed. My data is backed up to iCloud, but I'm hoping this can be repaired instead of requiring a replacement. What else can I try?

The model number and other identifying information are printed on the back, so you don’t need the screen working to find that. Three years isn’t necessarily too old for an iPad, but a sudden total loss of display can still be a hardware failure rather than normal aging.
If the iPad is detected by the computer but the display stays totally black after a restore, that points more toward a hardware problem than a software issue. It could be the display, display connection, or another internal component. Since the data is backed up, having a repair shop diagnose it is the next practical step.
Try connecting the iPad to a Mac or PC and see whether Finder or iTunes detects it. You can attempt an update first, followed by a restore if necessary. Also shine a flashlight directly across the screen while it’s powered on. If you can faintly see the Apple logo or another image, the backlight has likely failed and the device will need hardware repair.
I connected it to a Mac and tried both updating and restoring it. The screen remained black the whole time, and the update or restore window occasionally crashed, although it eventually seemed to download the software and complete the restore. The flashlight test didn’t show an image either.

I realized afterward that the model information was printed on the back. I’ll check it when I can get the iPad looked at.
