I recently upgraded from a Radeon 6750 XT to a Radeon 9070 XT, but I'm still using a 1080p monitor. My CPU is an Intel i5-14400F. I mainly play with the highest graphics settings I can use while targeting around 60 FPS, since I'm not particularly interested in much higher frame rates. Would moving to a 1440p monitor make sense with this hardware? My concern is that 1440p might make the system feel outdated sooner, requiring another upgrade in five or six years, whereas staying at 1080p might extend its useful life. Would 1440p be the better choice for this setup?

Yes, 1440p is a very sensible upgrade here. The 9070 XT is more than capable at 1440p and can even handle 4K in many games. I’d look at a 1440p monitor with a high refresh rate, such as 144 Hz or more, even if you usually cap games around 60 FPS. It gives you smoother desktop use and room to take advantage of higher frame rates when a game allows it.
I’d choose 1440p, ideally with adaptive sync and a refresh rate of at least 144 Hz. You can still cap demanding games at 60 FPS, but the monitor won’t hold you back in lighter games. Staying at 1080p will extend the life of the setup somewhat, but the 9070 XT is powerful enough that the sharper resolution is the better match right now.
You’d be underusing that graphics card at 1080p. At 1440p, you should still get excellent performance at high or maximum settings, often well above 60 FPS depending on the game. A higher-resolution monitor also makes the image noticeably sharper, so the upgrade should feel substantial rather than merely incremental.
The CPU should be fine for your goal of 1440p and 60 FPS. Resolution mostly changes how much work the GPU has to do, and the 9070 XT has plenty of headroom for 1440p. Even when newer games become more demanding, you can lower a few settings or use upscaling before needing a full platform upgrade. A 1440p display is unlikely to force you into upgrading the rest of the system sooner by itself.
The reason I chose the 14400F was to avoid moving to DDR5 and replacing the motherboard. I mainly wanted to confirm that it wouldn’t be a major limitation at 1440p.
