I'm planning a new gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 9600X and a Radeon 9060 XT 16GB. I'll be playing a mix of competitive games and more demanding modern titles. The build is currently around $1,500, but choosing 32GB of DDR5 instead of 16GB would add roughly $160 and bring the total close to $1,700. Is 16GB still practical, or is 32GB worth prioritizing for this kind of system?

I’d avoid planning around a future upgrade unless you’ve already checked that the motherboard has two free memory slots and the upgrade will be straightforward. Buying a matched 32GB kit now is usually cleaner than mixing another pair of sticks later, and memory prices may not stay the same.
For gaming, 32GB is the better choice these days. Sixteen gigabytes can still run many games, especially competitive ones, but it’s getting close to the minimum once you add newer titles, background apps, browsers, and launchers.
Sixteen gigabytes will work if the budget is tight, and you can lower settings or close background programs when necessary. That said, 32GB gives you more headroom and makes the system feel less restrictive, so I’d try to fit it into the build if possible.
