I'm considering upgrading only my graphics card to a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and using DLSS for mostly 4K gaming with ray tracing or path tracing. For especially demanding games, I'd be willing to drop to 1440p, and stable 45 FPS is acceptable for single-player titles. My current CPU is a 10th-generation Intel model, so I'm trying to make the GPU the main bottleneck without spending heavily on a full platform upgrade. I'm also deciding between a 32-inch 4K OLED monitor and a 42-inch 4K OLED TV. The games I'm interested in include Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Call of Duty, and future releases such as GTA 6 and The Witcher 4. Is 16GB of DDR4 system memory still sufficient, or would moving to 32GB be important for this kind of gaming?

Look at testing for the exact games rather than assuming 4K requires more system RAM. Compare 16GB and 32GB while monitoring RAM usage, frame-time spikes, and background applications. Also remember that a 10th-generation CPU could become the limiting factor in some games, particularly at 1440p or when targeting higher frame rates, although that matters less if you’re comfortable with roughly 45 FPS at 4K.
16GB can still work if the game is the main thing running. Resolution itself doesn’t directly increase system RAM usage; the game, background programs, and overall asset requirements are what matter. If you keep lots of browser tabs, Discord, launchers, or other apps open, 16GB can become tight and cause stuttering when Windows starts using the page file. 32GB would be a sensible quality-of-life upgrade, but it isn’t automatically required for 4K gaming.
For demanding path-traced games, even 16GB of VRAM can sometimes be restrictive once you add high-quality textures and frame generation. System RAM won’t solve a VRAM shortage. You may need to lower textures, disable path tracing, use DLSS, or accept lower frame rates in titles like Cyberpunk. Requirements for unreleased games such as GTA 6 and The Witcher 4 are still too uncertain to plan around confidently.
The more important limit for 4K ray tracing or path tracing is usually GPU VRAM, not system RAM. If the graphics card runs out of VRAM, textures and other data may spill into system memory or storage, which can cause hitching and severe performance drops. Check benchmarks for the specific 5070 Ti model and the games you care about, especially with high-resolution textures and frame generation enabled.
There’s no universal answer because RAM usage varies by game and settings. Some current large open-world games are much more comfortable with 32GB, and future AAA releases may make that more common. Since you’re already considering a costly GPU and OLED display, upgrading to 32GB is relatively inexpensive insurance, but you can start with 16GB and add more later if your motherboard has free slots and compatible memory.
