I bought a brand-new 48GB kit made up of two 24GB DDR5 modules rated at 6000MHz with CL28 timings. I paid £400, and a friend says it was an amazing deal. Considering current memory prices, is this actually a good price, or did I overpay?

You didn’t get ripped off. Whether it’s the absolute lowest price depends on the exact brand and model, but £400 for a new 48GB DDR5-6000 CL28 kit is reasonable and probably a good buy at present.
The important distinction is that it’s good value in the current market, not necessarily compared with historical prices. RAM was dramatically cheaper less than a year ago, so you would have paid under £200 for something similar back then. Unfortunately, current pricing is much higher.
It’s a good price by today’s standards. Similar 2x24GB 6000MHz kits are being listed closer to £470–£600, so £400 is on the favorable side.
For the current market, yes, that’s a very good deal. A 2x16GB kit can cost around £350 or more, and this kit gives you 48GB with 6000MHz speed and tight CL28 timings. That works out to roughly £8.33 per GB, which is excellent right now.
