Is a 40°C GPU-to-Hotspot Delta Too High on a Gigabyte RTX 4090?

I have a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming OC purchased in December 2022. During demanding games, the GPU runs at about 73°C, memory reaches around 68°C, and power usage is close to 400 W. The hotspot, however, regularly climbs to roughly 112°C—nearly a 40°C difference from the main GPU temperature. When this happens, the fans suddenly ramp up to approximately 3466 RPM, creating a very loud noise. These spikes occur every few minutes, sometimes repeatedly, while the delta remains high even when the fans are running normally. I have already tried changing the fan curve in Gigabyte Control Center and MSI Afterburner, updating the graphics drivers and GPU BIOS, and reseating the card. The card is no longer under warranty. Is this hotspot temperature and delta cause for concern? Could it point to degraded thermal paste, poor cooler contact, or aging thermal pads?

A nearly 40°C delta is unusually large and strongly suggests poor contact between the cooler and the GPU die, or dried-out/uneven thermal paste. Repasting would be the most likely fix, preferably using the correct materials and following a teardown guide specifically for this Gigabyte Gaming OC model. If you do not want to open the card yourself, a repair shop familiar with Gigabyte coolers would be safer.

I would avoid continuing to run it at full power until you address the cooling problem. A temporary workaround is undervolting, lowering the power limit to around 70–80%, reducing the clock speed, and capping your frame rate. Those changes can substantially reduce power draw and fan spikes, but they are only a mitigation rather than a real repair.

The hotspot can briefly spike, but seeing about 112°C together with a persistent 40°C gap is not typical. A healthy card usually has a much smaller difference under comparable load. Since the card is out of warranty, replacing the core interface material—and inspecting the cooler mounting and pads while it is apart—would be reasonable.

Some owners have had good results replacing the original VRAM and power-component pad material and using a high-quality phase-change sheet on the GPU core. After that kind of service, hotspot deltas around 10°C are achievable. Be careful, though: incorrect pad thickness or mounting pressure can make temperatures worse, and the wrong materials can damage the card.
