Is a 650W PSU enough for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RX 9070 XT build?

I'm building a new gaming PC and will only be reusing my existing SSDs. The system includes a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 motherboard, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, and a Gigabyte Gaming OC Radeon RX 9070 XT. I originally ordered an MSI MAG A650GL 650W Gold-rated power supply, but AMD recommends at least 750W for the RX 9070 XT. Is 650W realistically sufficient, or should I replace it with an 850W unit? Are there any other component compatibility or performance concerns, such as the motherboard, cooler, memory, or case airflow?

The CPU, graphics card, motherboard, and memory are all high-end choices, so the power supply is the one part that feels undersized. AMD’s recommendation is worth following, especially since the graphics card can briefly draw much more power than its typical rating. Moving to a good 850W unit would be the safer choice.

That makes sense. I replaced the original unit with the 850W Montech Century II for the extra headroom.

There will always be some kind of bottleneck in a PC, and it can change depending on the game or workload. For gaming, the GPU is usually the limiting component, which is generally what you want. The parts are otherwise well matched. You could consider a Ryzen 7 7800X3D if it saves a significant amount, but the 650W power supply is the main concern. Also double-check the case airflow—if the front panel is mostly tempered glass, the front fans may not be very effective.

Exactly. Different games can stress different parts of the system, so there is no single bottleneck that applies all the time.

I would definitely use a larger power supply. An 850W model such as the Montech Century II gives you more headroom for the RX 9070 XT’s power spikes and should cost around the same as the 650W unit. It is a better fit for the rest of this build.
