I'm looking for my first 4K display and mainly want it for Netflix, YouTube, and movies—not gaming. I don't care much about refresh rate, and my RX 6700 XT would stay on my 1080p monitors for gaming. I've seen 27-inch 4K monitors ranging from about $177 to $450–$550, such as the ViewSonic VA2708. For this use case, is it reasonable to buy the cheapest model, or are there important differences in panel quality, scaling, HDR, streaming support, or reliability that I should watch for? Would a 1440p monitor or even a small TV make more sense?

A 27-inch 4K screen gives you a sharp image, but 4K streaming is more limited than the labels suggest. Some services require the right subscription, app, browser, DRM support, and connection speed, and much of the catalog may not truly be available in 4K. A good 27-inch 1440p display may offer better overall value, while OLED or Mini-LED models improve contrast if you have a larger budget. Compare specific models and reviews, not just brands.
For movies and streaming, consider a small 4K television instead of a monitor. TVs often provide better contrast, built-in streaming features, speakers, and a larger image for the money, and they can connect to a computer over HDMI. Just check the TV’s input compatibility, text clarity, viewing distance, and whether its smart apps support the services you use.
For watching video, the inexpensive monitor could be perfectly adequate, but check reviews for brightness, contrast, viewing angles, backlight bleed, color accuracy, and warranty rather than judging by resolution alone. Also make sure your computer, cable, browser, and streaming service can actually deliver 4K; the weakest part of that chain determines the final quality.
It would be strictly for Netflix and YouTube, not gaming. In that case, would a basic 4K monitor work well as long as the PC and streaming setup support 4K?
I already have two 1080p monitors for gaming, so this would only be an extra display for video. I’m mainly trying to decide whether the sharper image is worth paying more for.
