Is a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and RX 6900 XT the best way to extend my AM4 build?

I'm currently running a B450 Plus motherboard, 32GB of 3600MHz RAM in a 2x16GB kit, a Ryzen 5 3600, and an RX 6700 XT. I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and a used RX 6900 XT, which is available for around $280. I already have a 1000W Gold-rated power supply, so power should not be an issue. My goal is to keep the system useful for another two to four years, but I'm unsure whether this AM4 upgrade is worthwhile or if I should save for a complete AM5 build instead. I use a 1440p 240Hz monitor for multiplayer games and a 4K 120Hz display for single-player games. At 1440p, I currently get roughly 60–80 FPS, but the performance is unstable, and 4K gaming is often below 60 FPS.

If you have access to a discounted Ryzen 5 5600X3D, it can be a better value for gaming. It’s only a few percent slower than the 5800X3D in many games, while costing substantially less. Otherwise, the 5800X3D is the strongest straightforward gaming upgrade for your AM4 platform.

Whether this is worth it depends on your expectations. If you simply want a few more years from the current system, upgrading to a 5800X3D makes a lot of sense and avoids replacing your motherboard and RAM. If your goal is high-refresh 4K gaming with ray tracing, it would be better to save for a complete newer-platform build instead.

The 5800X3D is an excellent final upgrade for AM4 and should noticeably improve CPU-limited and high-refresh-rate gaming. For the graphics card, though, I’d consider a newer-generation model if your budget allows. The 6900 XT is still capable, especially at $280, but newer cards may offer better efficiency, features, and ray-tracing performance.

The low price is the main reason I’m considering the 6900 XT. I’d like to get as much life out of AM4 as possible, so I’m weighing that against buying a newer GPU.

A 5800X3D paired with a newer high-end GPU could be a sensible stopping point. Something in the class of an RX 9070 XT would give you a stronger long-term graphics upgrade, and you could potentially skip a full platform change until a later CPU and memory generation becomes more affordable.

That sounds like a reasonable compromise. I may upgrade the CPU now and use a newer GPU to delay moving to AM5.

Your monitor setup matters a lot here. The 5800X3D would help with the inconsistent 1440p multiplayer performance, but a 6900 XT still won’t guarantee high-refresh 4K gaming, especially with ray tracing enabled. If you want a more noticeable improvement in 4K story games, prioritize the GPU and consider a newer generation card.

I’m mainly trying to stabilize 1440p multiplayer performance while making 4K gaming more playable. I understand that reaching 120 FPS at 4K would require a much larger upgrade.
