My current system has a Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3070 Ti, B550 motherboard, and 32GB of DDR4-3600 memory. I mainly play at 1440p. The 3070 Ti struggles in newer RPGs when I use higher settings, while games like Darktide and Total War can become CPU-limited. I'm considering an RX 9070 XT for a substantial graphics upgrade and a Ryzen 7 5800X3D as the best gaming CPU upgrade available without moving to AM5 and replacing my motherboard and memory. The two upgrades would cost about $1,100 total. Is that combination a worthwhile improvement, or would it make more sense to upgrade only the graphics card and wait on a new platform?

The RX 9070 XT should be a major upgrade by itself, while the 5600X is still perfectly usable for 1440p in most games. I’d install the new GPU first and see whether Darktide and Total War still feel CPU-limited before spending another few hundred dollars. Unless you need very high refresh rates or maximum settings everywhere, keeping the current CPU for a while could be the better value.
The proposed combination would handle modern 1440p gaming very well, but $1,100 is a lot to spend for an upgrade that may not be necessary immediately. Ask whether you want higher frame rates right now or simply want to refresh the system. If your current games are playable at around 60–90 FPS, keeping the 5600X and waiting for a complete future-platform upgrade could be the more economical choice.
The 5800X3D is a strong final upgrade for an AM4 gaming system, especially in CPU-heavy games like Total War, simulators, open-world games, and strategy titles. It can noticeably improve frame-time consistency and 1% lows, but the benefit depends heavily on whether your GPU is already being fully utilized. If you plan to stay on AM4 for several years, buying the fastest sensible gaming CPU for the platform can be justified; otherwise, waiting for a future platform may offer better value.
Overall CPU usage can be misleading when diagnosing a bottleneck. A game may heavily load one or two cores while total usage only appears to be around 25%, so check individual core usage and GPU utilization rather than relying on the total CPU percentage.
The GPU upgrade is the easier recommendation. The 9070 XT should provide a large improvement over the 3070 Ti, while the 5800X3D may mainly improve minimums and reduce stutters rather than dramatically increase average frame rates at 1440p.
