I currently have a Core i9-12900K and have the opportunity to buy a brand-new, sealed Core i9-14900K at a very good price. After selling my 12900K, the upgrade would effectively cost me nothing. My system uses an ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming WiFi II motherboard with BIOS 2107, which includes Intel's 0x12F microcode update. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade, and would the newer BIOS make the processor reasonably safe from the degradation and instability problems reported with some 13th- and 14th-generation CPUs? Or could the chip still fail later despite the updates?

The 14900K is the fastest processor available for that motherboard and can be a meaningful improvement in heavily threaded workloads, so technically it is a strong drop-in upgrade. However, it runs hot, draws a lot of power, and may require careful power limits, cooling, and memory settings. I would only consider it if you can verify the purchase date and warranty, use conservative Intel-approved settings, and accept that you are giving up your 12900K as a backup.
A factory-sealed chip is not automatically from a safe production batch, so the original purchase date and warranty coverage matter. The extended warranty helps if the processor fails, but it does not prevent downtime or the hassle of replacing it. If the deal is unusually good, make sure the seller can provide proof of purchase and that the processor is compatible with the current BIOS before deciding.
If your current processor is meeting your needs, there is not much reason to upgrade just for the sake of it. Intel’s BIOS and voltage-management changes appear to have reduced the failure rate, but they cannot repair any physical weaknesses in a chip that was already manufactured. Reports of failures also seem to be more common than with competing processors, so there is still some risk.
I would probably keep the 12900K and put the money toward a future platform or graphics-card upgrade. Even with the extended warranty and updated microcode, the BIOS cannot guarantee that every 14900K will remain healthy indefinitely. Waiting for a newer platform gives you a cleaner upgrade path instead of taking on a processor generation with a complicated reliability history.
That is also why I am hesitant about the upgrade. The performance is tempting, but I would rather move to a newer platform later than worry about whether the processor is slowly degrading.

The main appeal is that I can buy the sealed 14900K cheaply and sell my 12900K, making it essentially a zero-cost upgrade rather than spending money for a small performance increase.
