I'm looking at a used Lenovo ThinkPad T580 with an Intel Core i5, 12 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD for about $225 CAD. I want to install Linux Mint and play relatively undemanding games such as Minecraft. Is this a worthwhile, durable machine for the price, or should I look at other used laptops? I like ThinkPads, but I'm wondering whether they're genuinely good or just overhyped. The storage is a little small for me, although I'm planning to build a NAS soon and could upgrade the drive later.

The price seems fair rather than unbelievably cheap. A T580 should be a comfortable Linux laptop for browsing, programming, and everyday use, but its integrated graphics won’t handle demanding modern games. Minecraft and similar lightweight games should be realistic, especially if you avoid heavy shaders and large modpacks.
The 256 GB drive isn’t a dealbreaker because storage is upgradeable on the T580. If you plan to keep several games installed, replacing it with a 512 GB or 1 TB SSD would be worthwhile. Twelve gigabytes of RAM is usable, though 16 GB would be a nicer setup if the upgrade is inexpensive.
That sounds like a reasonable price if the laptop is in good condition. ThinkPads are popular mainly because business models are durable, easy to repair, and usually have replacement parts available. The T-series is generally much better built than Lenovo’s cheaper consumer models. Linux Mint should run comfortably, and Minecraft should be fine with modest settings, though the exact i5 generation and integrated graphics matter.
