Is an X670 or X870 motherboard overkill for a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 gaming PC?

I keep seeing gaming builds that pair a Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an X670, X670E, X870, or X870E motherboard, even when the system has one graphics card and a single PCIe 4.0 SSD. The extra PCIe slots are often unused, and the processor isn't a workstation-class chip. For a typical gaming build, wouldn't a good B650 or B850 motherboard provide essentially the same performance? Are the more expensive boards mainly worthwhile for features like additional M.2 slots, USB4, Wi-Fi 7, faster networking, better diagnostics, or future upgrades—or are many buyers simply paying for features they'll never use?

For gaming performance, you’re basically right: a capable B650 or B850 board will run a Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, and even many higher-end Ryzen processors just as fast at stock settings. The main differences are connectivity and expansion rather than frame rate. More expensive boards may provide additional M.2 and SATA slots, extra USB or USB-C ports, USB4, better networking, more PCIe lanes, diagnostic displays, BIOS controls, or support for unusual expansion-card layouts.

The VRM advantage is often overstated. Most decent B-series boards already have enough power delivery for gaming CPUs, so the processor’s quality and cooling usually become the limit before the motherboard does.

Price and bundles make a big difference. X870 and X870E boards are sometimes discounted or included in CPU-and-memory bundles, making them only slightly more expensive—or occasionally cheaper—than the B-series board someone originally wanted. At that point, taking the better-equipped board is perfectly reasonable even if the extra features aren’t immediately needed.

Extra storage is probably the most practical reason. Some X-series boards let you install three, four, or even five NVMe drives without disabling other slots or sharing bandwidth with the graphics card. That matters for people with large game libraries, video projects, fast external storage, or home-server plans. If you only need one or two drives, the advantage largely disappears.

Exactly. I bought an X-series board because the cheaper alternatives either had fewer M.2 slots or shared lanes in ways I didn’t want. It wasn’t about getting more FPS.
