Is Bazzite a Good First Linux Distro for Leaving Windows 10?

I'm finally planning to move from Windows 10 to Linux instead of paying for another license or upgrading to Windows 11. I'm completely new to Linux, and a friend recommended Bazzite because it is difficult to break accidentally, more secure by default, and well suited to gaming. I'll mainly use this PC for Steam games, Roll20 with Discord, and watching YouTube. I'm not comfortable with command-line-heavy systems or coding yet. Would Bazzite be a good fit, or should I start with Linux Mint, Fedora KDE, or another beginner-friendly distribution?

There is no single correct choice. Fedora KDE is another good middle ground: it has a polished, Windows-like interface while still being a conventional desktop Linux system. Bazzite is more specialized around a console-like, gaming-focused experience, so choose it if that sounds useful rather than assuming it is automatically better.

Bazzite is a strong option for your use case. It comes preconfigured for gaming, has a familiar desktop, and its image-based design makes many accidental system changes easier to recover from. It is not impossible to break, though—running random commands with administrator privileges can still cause trouble. Check ProtonDB for the games you play, since some multiplayer titles or anti-cheat systems may need Windows or a dual-boot setup.

Whichever distribution you choose, try it from a USB drive or in a virtual machine first and make backups before installing. You do not need to become a terminal expert, but learning basic concepts and avoiding commands you do not understand will prevent most problems. A beginner Linux guide can make the transition much less confusing.

Linux Mint is probably the gentlest starting point if you want a traditional desktop that feels familiar. It is beginner-friendly and works well for everyday browsing, Discord, media, and general applications. Gaming works too, although Bazzite may require less setup for Steam and gaming hardware.
