I currently have an Enermax D.F. 650W power supply connected to an RX 5700 XT using a daisy-chained PCIe cable. I'm considering upgrading to an RX 6800 XT, although I also briefly considered an RTX 5060 Ti. Is it safe to power the 6800 XT with the daisy-chained cable, or should I use a separate PCIe cable? I lost the extra cable for my modular PSU and found a replacement listed for Enermax units, but I'm unsure whether it's electrically safe and compatible with my exact power supply model.

Daisy-chaining a PCIe cable isn’t automatically dangerous. If the power supply can’t handle a transient load, its protection circuitry should shut the system down; insufficient power is more likely to cause crashes or instability than instantly damage the card. That said, the RX 6800 XT can draw enough power that a 650W unit is fairly borderline, so a quality 750W or 850W replacement would be the more comfortable option.
The connector situation depends on the graphics card. Many RTX 5060 Ti models use a 12VHPWR connection and include an adapter, while the RX 6800 XT uses conventional PCIe power plugs. Since you’re probably going with the 6800 XT, focus on getting the right PCIe cables for that card.

If you buy a replacement cable, verify that it is specifically made for your exact Enermax D.F. model and not merely labeled as compatible with Enermax. Never mix cables from another PSU brand or model. For a high-power card like the 6800 XT, using separate PCIe power leads from the PSU is ideal, but replacing the 650W unit with a modern, higher-wattage model may be safer and simpler overall.

You can test the existing setup, but upgrading the power supply proactively is preferable if the unit is older or you want more headroom.
