Is Freelance Web Development a Good Path for Me?

I've just started learning web development and I'm wondering if it's a viable career option or if I should look into something else. A bit about me: I'm 25 years old, and I've bounced around different fields—starting in robotics, then film and media, followed by art school. Recently, I had to pause my studies to care for my mom after her stroke. I have some experience building personal websites and I'm good with numbers, thanks to my interest in physics. I thought that doing freelance web development might be a way to earn some extra income on top of my art commissions, but I'm not sure if it's worth my time and effort. What are your thoughts?

As someone who has worked in web development, I think it’s all about enjoying the process. If you like it, start with a small website to showcase your work. You'll learn on the job, and from there, market yourself. Create a modest price list and spread the word among family and friends to get started.

Beyond learning technical skills like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you need to think about how you present yourself and build trust with clients. If you're confident you can do that, it's worth pursuing for extra income.

Make sure you genuinely enjoy web development before you dive in. You might struggle to gain clients quickly since freelance work often relies on networking and reputation.

It’s definitely worth learning, but don't expect to make a lot of money fast, especially with the current job market.

Freelancing can be tough when you're just beginning, especially if you haven't worked with clients before. The first year can be rough, but if you stick with it, it often gets better. If you’re passionate about it, go for it!
