I already use full-disk encryption on my Fedora laptop, but my desktop runs CachyOS alongside Windows and currently isn't encrypted. Since I would need to enter a password during startup and may have to redo the installation, I'm wondering whether it's worthwhile. I'm a casual gamer and don't keep especially sensitive files on the desktop. Is the added protection worth the setup hassle, or would encrypting only selected folders or a separate drive be enough?

It’s generally more valuable on laptops because they’re easier to lose or steal. Modern systems usually have only a small performance penalty, but encryption can make recovery more complicated if something goes wrong. Since your desktop is already installed and working, I wouldn’t reinstall solely for this unless the physical-theft risk matters to you.
For gaming, the performance impact on a modern computer is usually tiny—mostly a negligible difference in load times. The bigger considerations are key management, recovery, and whether you actually need protection from someone accessing the physical drive. If you do enable it, make sure you have tested backups and a safe way to recover your encryption key.
Full-disk encryption mainly protects your data if someone steals the computer or removes the drive. It doesn’t provide much benefit against normal remote attacks while the system is running. For a desktop that stays at home and contains little sensitive information, skipping encryption is a reasonable risk decision.
A middle ground is to leave the operating system unencrypted and protect only sensitive storage. You could use an encrypted external drive, partition, or directory for things like tax documents and personal records. That gives you useful protection without requiring a full reinstall or entering a password every time you boot.
