Is It Normal to Keep Forgetting Flexbox While Learning Web Development?

I've been teaching myself web development for about seven months and have built real layouts using Flexbox, including alignment and centering. But after a few weeks away from it, I often end up back on the documentation because the syntax feels unfamiliar again. I'm not trying to memorize every CSS property—I want to develop the judgment to recognize when Flexbox or Grid is the right tool. Should I schedule deliberate reviews, or is regularly forgetting syntax and checking documentation just a normal part of programming?

Forgetting the exact syntax is completely normal. Documentation exists for that. The more important thing is remembering the general purpose of the tools—like knowing when a one-dimensional Flexbox layout makes sense versus when Grid is a better fit. Keep building things and look up details as needed; repeated use will gradually make the common patterns automatic.

Three weeks is long enough to forget material that hasn’t become familiar through repeated use. Try using Flexbox in small personal projects a few times each week, and explain your layout decisions out loud or write down why you chose Flexbox instead of Grid. Those practical experiences tend to stick better than rereading a reference page.

You probably need more varied practice rather than more memorization. Build several layouts with different structures, then deliberately change the direction, alignment, spacing, and wrapping. Repetition helps, but variation makes you understand what each property actually does instead of remembering one isolated example.

A useful goal is to separate concepts from syntax. You should eventually recognize what properties such as row, column, start, center, and end are meant to control, but there’s no need to recall every spelling or option perfectly. A quick lookup is normal, and every lookup during a real project reinforces the pattern.
