I'm completely new to Linux and I'm considering Pop!_OS for a laptop with an Intel Core i5-9300H, GeForce GTX 1050 with 3GB of VRAM, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and a 500GB NVMe drive. I mostly play lighter games such as Grim Dawn, Stardew Valley, and Deadzone Rogue. How well should Pop!_OS work with this hardware, especially the NVIDIA graphics card, and is it beginner-friendly?

I’d be a little cautious about recommending it as a first Linux distribution right now. Pop!_OS’s newer COSMIC desktop is still developing, and some users have encountered crashes or other rough edges. It may work perfectly for you, but it’s worth watching a recent review or testing it from a live USB first.
The hardware should be more than capable of running Pop!_OS, and those games aren’t especially demanding. The main thing to watch is NVIDIA driver setup. Use the NVIDIA-specific installer image if it’s available for your release, or install the recommended proprietary driver afterward rather than relying on nouveau. You may also need to select the discrete GPU for some games on a laptop.
It should run fine overall. Your CPU, 16GB of RAM, and SSD are a good match, and the GTX 1050 is adequate for lighter games. Just make sure the proprietary NVIDIA driver is installed and expect to do a bit of troubleshooting around graphics switching or game compatibility.
