I'm putting together a gaming PC with a budget of about $1,500–$1,850, but rising memory prices have already pushed me roughly $200 over budget. I'm mainly planning to play at 1440p and probably won't upgrade the GPU for around four years. I'm comparing a 16GB PowerColor Reaper RX 9070 with a cheaper 12GB XFX Swift RX 9070 GRE. The GRE would save me about $100 and help offset the amount I've gone over budget. How significant is the difference in VRAM and overall performance, and would choosing the cheaper card be a sensible compromise?

The RX 9070 XT would be a stronger match for a build in this price range, but local pricing matters. If it costs around $900 where you live, it may not be worth stretching your budget. Before dropping to the GRE, check whether you can save money on the CPU, storage, case, or other components. A complete parts list would make it easier to find less painful cuts.
The GRE is slower in addition to having less VRAM, so it’s only attractive if it’s priced well below the regular RX 9070. For a four-year 1440p build, I’d prioritize the 16GB card unless choosing it forces you to compromise on other important parts.
Double-check the model names before deciding: there isn’t a standard 12GB RX 9070. The 12GB option is the RX 9070 GRE, which is a weaker card overall. It has less VRAM, a narrower memory bus, and lower performance, so you aren’t only giving up 4GB by choosing it. I’d avoid it unless the price is substantially below the 16GB model.
For 1080p and most 1440p gaming, 12GB can be adequate right now. However, high or ultra settings in newer games can already push past 12GB, and that is more likely to matter over the next four years. The 16GB card gives you more breathing room and should age better, especially if you want to avoid lowering texture quality.
That’s my main concern—I’ll be playing at 1440p and probably won’t upgrade for another four years.
Some games already exceed 12GB at 1440p with ultra settings, so 16GB is the safer long-term choice.

You’re right, I meant the 9070 GRE. I could save a little on the CPU, but the GPU is where I can cut the most.
