I'm finishing my first PC build and choosing between two refurbished graphics cards: a $750 Sapphire Nitro+ RX 9070 XT and a $1,400 ASUS Astral RTX 5080. I want to play mostly at 4K, with some 1440p gaming, and I'm interested in ray tracing. Is the RX 9070 XT capable enough for 4K ray-traced gaming, or does the RTX 5080 justify its much higher price? I'm coming from a PS5 Pro and would appreciate advice on performance, image-quality features, and overall value.

The RX 9070 XT is the much better value here. The RTX 5080 is generally only around 15–20% faster in traditional rendering, while costing roughly 86% more. Unless you specifically need CUDA, demanding productivity software, or the best possible path-tracing performance, that premium is hard to justify. You could put the savings toward a better monitor, the rest of the build, or a future upgrade.
The specific model matters less than the GPU, so don’t pay a large premium for a fancy cooler. Also, be careful with the Nitro+ power connection and its adapter: use a properly connected, compatible power supply cable and make sure the plug is fully seated. If you choose the 9070 XT, checking the refurbished warranty and finding a model with a straightforward power setup would be sensible.
The main reason to choose the RTX 5080 is ray tracing and especially path tracing. In regular ray tracing, the advantage may be roughly 15–25%, while path tracing can make the gap much larger in supported games. If you mainly play a handful of path-traced titles, use CUDA applications, or want Nvidia’s frame-generation and reconstruction features, the 5080 has clear advantages. For ordinary rasterized gaming, though, the extra cost is poor value. I would also look for a cheaper 5080 model rather than paying extra for the Astral cooler.
The 9070 XT can handle 4K very well, especially with reasonable settings and upscaling. It may not deliver maximum settings, heavy ray tracing, and high frame rates simultaneously in every game, but it is still a strong 4K card. At 1440p, it should be excellent. The 5080 also often needs upscaling and frame generation for demanding 4K ray-traced titles, so it does not completely eliminate those compromises.
If you already have a 4K OLED or a high-refresh 4K display and money is no concern, the 5080 will provide the higher performance. But if this is a first build and the price difference matters at all, I’d buy the 9070 XT. At 1440p it will be more than enough, and at 4K you can use sensible settings or upscaling for a very good experience. The display you plan to use should be the deciding factor.

Exactly. The 5080 is faster for ray tracing, but it still cannot run every modern game at native 4K with maximum ray tracing settings and high frame rates without help from features such as DLSS.
